Cylinder seals, commonly used in daily life, spread on a large scale throughout the ancient Near East. Their study is of great interest because they are documents that give us in a tangible way information on ancient civilizations: names and functions of the gods, cults, social and economic life, clothing, weapons, tools, various traditions, etc.
The seal is made of stone, most commonly the hard variety known as hematite. In Ugarit, excavations have revealed a large number of seals, some made of stone, others made of a kind of ceramic called "frit".
