A Lid and a Receptacle

The lid of this sarcophagus is disproportionately tall, with its edges slightly protruding above the receptacle; this discrepancy suggests a different provenance of the sarcophagus components. The front of the receptacle features three large sculpted circles, the two on the sides containing a small disc or cabochon in the center while the middle one features a tabula ansata, likely designated for an inscription with the name of the deceased.

Provenance: ?
Material: imported marble.
Dimensions: height of the receptacle 88.5 cm, length 211 cm, height of the lid 66 cm, length of the lid 226 cm.
Era: late second century CE (receptacle) and early 3rd century (lid).
Text adapted from Šḥāda (p. 283).
Collection of the National Museum of Damascus.
