Bearded Man (as-Suwaydāʾ)

A young man with serene facial features. The mouth is small, and the lips are pursed. Covering the cranium is short, curly hair. The forehead is narrow. The face is elongated by a thick beard. It is possible that the head belonged to a monumental bas-relief.

The right upper part of the skull, including the orbit, is broken off. The nose is damaged and almost entirely flattened. The surface is covered by a reddish-brown to mauve patina.

Provenance: as-Suwaydā. Acquired by the Museum on June 13, 1947.
Substance: basalt.
Dimensions: H 28 cm, W 17 cm, D 20 cm.
Era: late first century CE.
Text: adapted from Weber (p. 108).
