ربّة سعد تلّ منس

 

تمثال ذهبي لربّة السعد تايكي تقِفُ على قاعدةٍ وتمسكُ قرناً للوفرة بيدِها اليسرى وقرصاً أو كرةً ياليمنى. الرأسُ مكلّلٌ بتاجٍ أسطوانيّ الشكل، والشعر منسدِلٌ على الكتفين. الثوبُ سابغٌ وفضفاضٌ يشكِّلَ طيّاتٍ عموديّةٍ تخفي استدارات الجسم. يدلُّ وجود عروةٍ صغيرةٍ على قفا التمثال + استعمال المعدن الثمين أنّهُ كان حليةً علّها زيّنت صَدْرَ فتاةٍ من عائلةٍ موسرة.

Tyche (Tell Mannas)

Ḥabībā

 

This limestone sculpture features a bejeweled Palmyrene girl named Ḥabībā. The skull is disproportionately large. The thick hair is carefully combed above the broad forehead. The eyes are wide-open, the cheeks are full, and the chin is dimpled. The robe follows the body's curves, descending all the way to the ankles. The sleeves are long. Two necklaces adorn a rather large neck. The upper necklace has a pendant in the form of a medallion. A bunch of dates is held with the right hand, and a bird is carried with the left. This piece was displayed at the National Museum of Damascus during its 1969 exhibition. Dimensions are not provided.

A Funerary Banquet

The exuberant decoration of this sculpture is characteristic for Palmyra's funerary art. The deceased is reclining on his bed, and his facial features indicate strength and serenity. The person with a hammered face standing to his right is perhaps his wife. The mattress is richly embroidered, and the frame is equally elaborate. This beautiful piece was on display during the 1969 exhibition of the National Museum of Damascus.

Asclepius of Apamea

 

This marble statue was excavated at Apamea by the Mission Archéologique Belge and displayed at the National Museum of Damascus during its 1969 exhibition of Classical artifacts; it may represent Asclepius. god of medicine in Greek mythology. The upper chest and right arm are bare. The head is amputated, and the right upper extremity beyond the elbow is missing. Dimensions are not provided.

ʿAzār Cemetery: Bacchus

 

This statue is currently a collection of the Museum of Ṭarṭūs. It was, however, briefly on display in the Museum of Damascus during the 1969 Exhibition of Classical Artifacts. The god stands naked, holding bunches of grapes with his left hand, with his long garment hanging at his left shoulder and elbow. The head is missing, and the right upper extremity is amputated just above the corresponding elbow. The right knee is slightly bent, and the feet are unshod.

An Apothecary Scale

قنّينة صيدلانيّة أثريّة وملعقتان

 

الزجاجُ مناسبٌ للاستعمالات الصيدلانيّة. جسم القنّينة المعروضة أسطوانيّ الشكل، رقبتُها قصيرة وضيّقة، وفمُها عريضٌ. الملعقتان مختلفتان في الحجم، ومن المحتمل أنّها استُعْمِلتا لإعطاء جرعات مختلفة من العقاقير.

Bottle and Spoons

Bāb Srīǧā

 

This showcase features a collection of artifacts from Roman tombs in Damascus at Bāb Srīǧā. The items on display include gold jewelry, pottery, and glassware. The discovery was made in 1969.

The 1969 Exhibition of Classical Artifacts

 

Suhayl al-Ġazzī, Minister of Culture, National Guidance, and Tourism, inaugurated an exhibition of Syrian classical artifacts at the National Museum of Damascus on Monday, November 13, 1969. The exhibition was the first that concerned itself exclusively with Syrian Hellenistic and Roman artifacts. Two guides to this event, one in Arabic and the other in French, were published by the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums.

The showcase in the attached photograph features several items discovered in Fīq, including plates, bottles of different shapes, a gold necklace, a gold ring, and an ebony bracelet.

من المحتمل أنّ الأدوات الأكبر حجماً في هذه المجموعة استُعْمِلَت مخارزاً جراحيّةً. نرى بالتدقيق في الأدوات الثلاث على يسار الناظر أنّها قُولِبَت بعناية لتعزيز قبضة الجرّاح عليها. وظيفة الأدوات الأصغر حجماً أقّل وضوحاً، وعلّها استُخْدِمت مبعداتٍ لحافتيّ الجرح.

Surgical Drills

A Sarcophagus or a Bathtub?

 

The shape of the supposed sarcophagus in the attached photo is rather suggestive of a bathtub. The ornament consists of two lion heads on the long side. The piece is made of granite, which points to an Egyptian origin.

Curettes, Spatulas, and Spoons

Four Eros and Three Psyches

 

This relief from an ancient sarcophagus depicts scenes from the myth of Eros and Psyche. Seven characters are represented on a rectangular background, beneath a molding; they are, from left to right, Eros, naked and winged, facing forward, leaning on a support concealed by drapery; Psyche, wearing an Ionian tunic with butterfly wings, holding the bound hands behind the back of another Eros standing on a plinth. Their faces are badly mutilated. On the same plinth, Eros again holds a piece of the drapery covering his upper body to his eyes, as if to wipe away his tears. To his left, Psyche, her torso bare and her legs bent, implores him and bows before him. Finally, there is Eros, seen from the front, his torso completely bare, with Psyche, resting her right arm on his shoulder. She resembles the previous figure of Psyche.

يمتلكُ متحف دمشق مجموعةً غنيّةً من المباضع أو المشارط المختلفة الأشكال والأحجام. من الرؤوس ما هو كبير وبيضويّ الشكل، ومنها ما هو صغير أشبه بنصل النبال. المقابضُ أيضاً متفاوتةٌ في هيئتها ومقاساتِها.

Ancient Lancets

Meleager and the Boar

 

Meleager, one of the Argonauts, is famed in Greek mythology as the host of the Calydonian boar hunt. This sarcophagus features the hero leading a host of warriors in a heated confrontation with the legendary animal. Meleager is seen aiming his spear at the boar while his consort, Atalanta, right behind him, draws an arrow from the quiver behind her right shoulder and holds the bow with her left hand.

مسابر جراحيّة أثريّة

 

أو كما أسماها زهدي (صفحة ١١٠) مخالب أو سنّارات طبيّة، بيد أنّها تبدو لي أقرب إلى أدوات السبر المُسْتَعْمَلة في الجراحة لتقدير عمق الجرح أو القرحة ومدى اختراقِها للجلد وأذيّة طبقات الأنسجة العميقة. التحقّق من وظيفة هذه الأدوات قبل ألفيّ عام من الصعوبة بمكان بطبيعة الحال. بعضُ هذه المسابر مرهف الحدّ، وبعضُها الآخر كليل، ممّا يدلّ على تنوّعِ استطباباتِها.

Ancient Surgical Probes

A Lid and a Receptacle

 

The lid of this sarcophagus is disproportionately tall, with its edges slightly protruding above the receptacle; this discrepancy suggests a different provenance of the sarcophagus components. The front of the receptacle features three large sculpted circles, the two on the sides containing a small disc or cabochon in the center while the middle one features a tabula ansata, likely designated for an inscription with the name of the deceased.

ملاقط جراحيّة أثريّة

 

يمتلك المتحفُ مجموعةً لا بأس بها من الملاقط الجراحيّة التي تشهدُ، بتنوّعِ قياساتِها واختلاف تفاصيلِها ودقّةِ صَنْعَتِها، على تطوّر الجراحة وأدواتِها في سوريّا الكلاسيكيّة. يبلغ طولُ أكبر ملقط في الصورة الملاحقة ١٦٣ من معاشير المتر.

The Brooch - Snake

A Classical Sarcophagus

 

This sarcophagus has suffered substantial damage, with the upper left part of the receptacle almost completely missing. The lid features rich ornamentation consisting of a bull's head in the middle and two wreaths surmounted each by a lion's head on the sides. The receptacle has two larger wreaths; the remaining one is topped by Medusa's head. A representation of Nike frames the main scene from right and left with Eros featured right in the middle.
