Basalt Basin from Ebla

A basin divided into two equal compartments and decorated with bas-reliefs representing humans and animals. It probably was used in religious ceremonies. The lower front face displays a giant person to the right with the remaining space divided into two registers: the lower register is occupied by four animals (lions?) with wide-open mouths. The upper register features a standing figure opposite a seated person carrying a cup with three warriors standing behind him holding their lances. Four similarly armed soldiers occupy the upper register of the side face on the right while the lower register repeats the pattern previously described.

Provenance: Ebla.
Substance: basalt.
Era; Early Bronze Age.
Dimensions: 87 x 87 cm.
