The four large arches spring from the level at which the masonry changes from large to small stones and are completed in brick. Within the recesses formed by the large arches are four small pointed arches, entirely of brick, built up against the monolithic lintels of the door and the three windows. The tympana above the lintels and behind the small arches are filled with brick.

At the top of the stone cube is a corbelled course of brick, missing in many places, from which the arches of the lower zone of transition spring. The squinches of the lower zone of transition begin with a course of stones placed atop the corbelled brick course.

The upper zone of transition springs from another corbelled brick course. The gored dome begins in similar fashion.

The pavement is probably lost, and while there may have been a dado, that is lost, too.

The muqarnaṣ cornice is composed of repeated units, which here run into a broad horizontal band. These units are composed of small muqarnaṣ cells supporting much taller split cells set back-to-back.

М. МАСTORIUS BARBARUS
F ( ECI ) T

This mausoleum, along with Turbat Sitt aš-Šām aṣ-Ṣughrā and al-Madrasah aš-Šāmīyyā, was cleared of some surrounding buildings in the mid-1980's, and excavated and stripped of most of its original interior plaster in 1988. It consists of a stone cube with a gored brick dome on a double zone of transition composed of two brick drums.

On the visible side, the lower part of the base is composed of large stones that frame, with some change in coursing, a door frame of large stones and a monolithic lintel. Above the lintel is a three-stone relieving arch with a thin, slightly tapered basalt key. Apart from the basalt key, all the stones up to this level appear to be whitish limestone. Above, however, they are a much more porous stone, so stained as to appear to be basalt. Large stones are employed, at least on the visible side, but only up to the top of the door frame.

Lower zone of transition is an octagon built of brick. It has eight arched openings. The arches are pointed. Shallow niches occupy the sides of the octagon where blind Miḥrābs alternate with double windows.

The shorter upper zone of transition is a hexadecagon. Single windows with blind arches alternate on its sides in the same manner, with a window above each side of the lower drum.

The fluted dome has a very satisfying profile. The creases of the sixteen gores are aligned with the centers of the sixteen sides of the upper zone of transition.
