Nude Youth riding a Horse

 


A naked youth riding a horse. The genitals are visible, and the sculpture may therefore represent Eros, assuming that it originally had wings. The horse's head, neck, and four extremities are missing. Of the boy there remain the pelvis, buttocks, and thighs.  

Provenance: Provenance: aš-Šayẖ Saʿd.
Era: 2nd - 3rd century CE.
Substance: grey basalt. 
Dimensions: H 32 cm, W 27 cm, D 48 cm. 
Text: adapted from Weber (p. 46). 
Collection: the National Museum of Damascus. Discovered by the Czech Archaeological Mission under the directorship of Bedřich Hrozný in 1924, it was acquired by the National Museum in May 1925. It currently is in a storage room.
