Sitting Lioness (al-Ḥārrā)

 


A statue featuring a crouching lioness in a similar pose to the already described sphinx. Her female sex is emphasized by her teats, though contradicted by the mane covering the neck and shoulders. Parts of the face are lost. The front legs, along with the corresponding pedestal, are missing. 

Provenance: al-Ḥārrā. Acquired on March 24, 1949. 
Substance: basalt. 
Dimensions: H 63 cm, L 61 cm, W about 26 cm. 
Era: second  to third century CE.
