Sitting Sphinx

 


A statuette featuring a crouching sphinx sitting on a rectangular pedestal. Her female sex is emphasized by her teats. The broken wings are spread from the shoulders upwards, and the feathers are indicated in a scale-like manner with semicircular tops. Surrounding the neck is a collar with a small round pendant. 

Provenance: al-Ḥārrā. Acquired on March 24, 1949. 
Substance: black basalt. 
Dimensions: H 38 cm, W 28 cm, L 47 cm. 
Era: second  to third century CE.
