Nike's Wing II

 


Yet another fragment from a Victory's wing. Only the middle part of the wing is preserved, featuring four rows of rounded feathers, separated from each other by fine horizontal incisions. 

Provenance: Provenance: aš-Šayẖ Saʿd.
Era: 2nd - 3rd century CE.
Substance: black basalt. 
Dimensions: H 21.2 cm, W 16.2 cm, D 5.6 cm. 
Text: adapted from Weber (p. 48). 
Collection: the National Museum of Damascus. Discovered by the Czech Archaeological Mission under the directorship of Bedřich Hrozný in 1924, it was acquired by the National Museum in May 1925.
