Door Corbel Stone

 


A door corbel that once supported the lintel of a monumental gate. Both sides are ornamented with s-shaped volutes, while the cross section features a frontal view of a nude man standing with his feet crossed with a vineyard framing the scene. 

Provenance: Provenance: aš-Šayẖ Saʿd.
Era: 2nd - 3rd century CE.
Substance: greyish basalt. 
Dimensions: H 46.8 cm, W 65.5 cm, D 20.3 cm.

Collection: the National Museum of Damascus. Discovered by the Czech Archaeological Mission under the directorship of Bedřich Hrozný in 1924, it was acquired by the National Museum in May 1925.
