This artifact was chipped out of a river pebble and represents what is called lithic industry. It is an example of the earliest evidence we have of the presence of humans (homo erectus) in Syria. This heavy tool had a variety of uses. The only technique known at the time involved chipping away at one piece of flint until a coarsely shaped tool was obtained.
