Qārā's Saints

These remains of a fresco were discovered in 1975 under a thin layer of plaster in the prayer niche of Saint Jacob Monastery in Qārā, a town between Ḥimṣ and Damascus. This piece features the heads of three saints. The one on the left is possibly Saint Andrew. The middle one holding a scroll is likely Saint John the Baptist. The third head is too damaged to tell.

Style: Byzantine.
Era: Ayyūbīd.
Collection of the National Museum of Damascus.
