Madrasā aš-Šāmīyyā: Tombstones and Inscriptions

 

بِسۡمِ ٱڵَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ. كُلُّ مَنْ عَلَيْهَا

فَانٍ وَيَبْقَى وَجْهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو الْجَلالِ وَا

لإِكْرَام. توفّي الأمير الاسفهسلار الأجلّ الكبير المؤيّد

السعيد المجا (هد) إلى رحمة الله ناصر الدين صلاح ال

إسلام عدّة الإمام شرف الدولة بهاء الملّة مقدّم جيو

ش المسلمين ألپ قتلغ بك أبو سعيد محمّد بن شركوه تاسع وعشرين ...

Headstone of the middle cenotaph (80 x 95 cm):

1. "In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Every being on earth

2. is bound to perish. Only your Lord Himself, full of Majesty and 

3. Honor, will remain forever. The emir, the mighty great isfahsalār, the assisted (by Allah)

4. of blessed memory, the fighter of the Holy War, Nāsir ad-Dīn Salāḥ al-

5. Islām, the asset of the imām, the honor of the government, the splendor of the community, the leader of the armies

6. of the Muslims, Alp Qutluġ Bek abū Saʿīd Muḥammad son of Šīrkūh has passed away to Allahʾs mercy on the 29th"

الملك المعظّم فخر الدين تورا (ن) شاه بن ... الأجلّ نجم الدين

أيّوب قدّس اللهُ روحَهُ ونوّر ضريحَهُ بالاسكندريّة في

صَفَر سنة ستّ وسبعين وخمس مائة ونُقِلَ إلى دمشق 

في سنة ثمانين ثمّ نُقِلَ إلى ها هنا في شعبان سنة اثنين وثمانين

Headstone of the northern cenotaph (80 x 95 cm):

1. "In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Every being on earth

2. is bound to perish. Only your Lord Himself, full of Majesty and 

3. Honour, will remain forever. The deceased, the martyr, of blessed memory

4. al-Malik al-Muʿaẓẓam Faẖr ad-Dīn Tūrānšāh, son of the most magestic. . . . Naǧm ad-Dīn

5. ʾAyyūb — Allah sanctify his soul and illuminate his tomb! — has passed away in Alexandria in

6. Ṣafar 575 (July, 1180) and was transported to Damascus

7. in the year 80, and transported here in Šaʿbān 82 (October-November, 1186)"

هذا قَبْرُ المولى الأمير الاسفهسلار 

الأجلّ الغازي الشهيد السعيد 

حسام الدين أبي عبد الله محمّد ابن

عمر بن لاجين قدّس اللهُ روحَهُ ونوّر

ضريحَهُ توفّي ليلة السبت العشرين من شهر 

رمضان من سنة سبع وثمانين وخمس مائة 

الحمد لله وحده وصلواته على سيّدنا 

محمّد وآلِهِ وصحبته الطيّبين الطاهرين وسلّم تسليما

Headstone of the southern cenotaph (80-100 cm):

1. "In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. 

2. This is the tomb of the master, the emir, the isfahsalār

3. the most majestic, the martyred warrior, of blessed memory

4. Ḥusām ad-Dīn abu ʿAbdallah Muḥammad son 

5. of ʿUmar son of Lāǧīn. Allah sanctify his soul and illuminate

6. his tomb. he died at the eve of Saturday, 20 

7. Ramaḍān 587 (October 11, 1191)

8. Praise be to God alone, and may His blessings be upon our master 

9. Muḥmmad and his good, pure family and companions, and may He grant them abundant peace."
