Ḥuyaǧat Ḥalāwā

The displayed inscription is part of a floor mosaic from a vanished church; it was discovered in 1971 at Ḥuyaǧat Ḥalāwā, located at 15 kilometers to the north of al-Muraybiṭ. Within a rectangle approximately 230 × 110 cm, a Syriac inscription comprised of nine lines is identified; its translation is the following:

  1. in the month of March of the year seven hundred and eighty-

  2. two, in the days of Saint Marnūna

  3. the bishop and Mār Sirǧis the president

  4. of monastery monastery the well-remembered Mār

  5. Alexandra to their memory

  6. may they be blessed before God

  7. and everyone who contributed to the work

  8. and the lowly (poor?) sinner who made this inscription

  9. Amen
