Tanf V

The attached photo is of one of eight stones carrying Ṣafāʾitic inscriptions discovered 35 kilometers southeast of at-Tanf and brought to the National Museum of Damascus in 1966. The transliteration of this inscription is as follows:

Liʿazaz bin Aslam bin Rahs wa nadima ʿalā ʾabīhi wa ʿalā ʿawḏẖalhu wa ʿalā Šaʿwa ẖarṣ waṯaq bīyadihi wa ḏa Šara ʿal kasra wa faʿala.

This text names a certain Liʿazaz, son of Aslam, son of Rahs, mourning his father and his maternal uncle, who was buried with some piece of jewelry in his hand, and invoking the wrath of the Nabatean god ḏū aš-Šaraʿ on whoever might attempt to steal the precious ornament.
