A Palmyrene Lamp

 

This lamp was excavated at the Camp of Diocletian in Palmyra by a Polish archaeological team and was on display during the 1969 exhibition of the National Museum of Damascus. The ornamentation consists of a meticulously carved child-like human head framed by numerous radiating straight lines. The face is round with a broad forehead, wide-open eyes, a regular nose, full cheeks, and a dimpled chin.
