Dayr al-Wasṭāni

This basaltic stone originated from ad-Dayr al-Wasṭāni, a ruined monastery located east of an imaginary line connecting Sabẖat al-ʿUtaybā in the north with al-Hayǧānā in the south. The dimensions of the stone are 70 × 66 × 50 cm, and a Syriac inscription comprised of four lines is seen on one of its faces, the translation of which is as follows:

  1. This door was erected

  2. in the month of August

  3. of the year eight hundred

  4. and eighty seven
