The National Museum of Damascus has a large collection of earrings, the oldest of which were excavated in Mari and Ugarit. Piercing the ears for the purpose of donning rings must have been widespread. The earliest gold earrings were simple, with glass beads added later on. By the Hellenistic age, these jewels became quite elaborate, as will be demonstrated through a few specimens.
