The National Museum of Damascus boasts a large collection of priceless historical sculptures, frescoes, pottery, glass, utensils, mosaics, and jewels. Many are on display in the halls and galleries of the museum as well as in its garden. Quite few are inventoried and stored awaiting their turn and opportunity. Objects are classified by category and according to their provenance, the latter has not always been elucidated.
Above photo represents a sample from Dura Eurpopos, a Hellenistic city sacked by the Sassanians in 256 CE. The credit for following description goes to Sélim and Andrée Abdul-Haq who had this to say all the way back in 1951:
A golden oval brooch rimmed with an indented decoration with rubies and stones of inlaid ceramic. Seen in the center is a green stone surrounded with granulation and geometrical motifs in relief; the figure of a nude young man, standing and holding a Victory in his right hand, is engraved on it.
8.8 cm height x 7 cm width.
مجوهرات دورا أوروبوس
يمتلك متحف دمشق الوطني كنوزاً لا تقدّر بثمن من اللوحات والنحت (داخل المتحف وفي حديقته) والفخّار والزجاج والحلي والمجوهرات التاريخيّة والفسيفساء منها ما هو معروض ومنها مخزون، منها معروف المنشأ ومنها ما مجهول الأصل والفصل. تحتوي دهاليز وممرّات المتحف على كمّ كبير من هذه التحف وعلى سبيل المثال هذه الشكلة من دورا أوروبوس في الفترينة رقم ٣٢ التي وصفها الدكتوران سليم ورينيه عبد الحقّ عام ١٩٥١ كما يلي:
شكلة broche بيضويّة محاطة بزينة مسنّنة مع يواقيت حمراء وحجارة من الخزف المرصّع. يشغل حجر أخضر اللون المركز ويحيط به حبيبات granulation وعناصر زخرفيّة نافرة. نرى على هذا الحجر شابّاً عارياً واقفاً يحمل إله النصر في يده اليمنى.
الشكلة ذهبيّة وهي بارتفاع ٨٨ معشار المتر (ميليمتر) وعرض ٧٠ معشاراً.
