Dr. Pitard's work attempts to fill a sorely missing gap in the history of a city often described as the oldest continuously inhabited capital on earth. The available sources are a mixture of epigraphic evidence (mostly Assyrian and Egyptian) and tradition (Old Testament). Despite a rather heavy utilization of the biblical narrative, the picture remains incomplete and the continuity sketchy at best. Those shortcomings are no surprise: a thorough archaeological study of the Old City has yet to be initiated, but meanwhile this book should serve as a brief review for those interested.
