The Trojan War in Damascus

This magnificent sarcophagus was discovered in the town of ar-Rastan in 1977. It is a fine specimen of Hellenistic art, depicting in all likelihood a scene from the Trojan War with a fluid composition joining men, shields, horses, boats, and cadavers. It is modeled after the traditions of Athens' workshops and bears no relation to Oriental patterns whatsoever.
