A Classical Funerary Monument

This funerary bust is currently on display in the garden of the National Museum of Damascus. The sculpture is of a bearded man carved in high relief within a vaulted niche. The garments consist of a Greek-style chiton and himation. The man seems to be holding an object with his left hand while the fingers of his right hand reach to the folds of his mantle. A short Greek inscription is seen at the right upper corner. Provenance and dimensions are not indicated.

Era: Roman.
