The ʾUmayyād Mosque: A Prehistory

Much has been written about this work of al-Walīd. In 1893 a great fire destroyed it, and what we see today is a new building, though it keeps the body of the outer walls and follows inside the model of the old building. The Bonfils photographs (attached) reflect the situation before the fire. When Herzfeld saw it for the first time in 1903, it was under construction. Van Berchem had studied it in 1893, right before the fire, and then in 1894, immediately after; his notes, together with unpublished notes of René Dussaud, taken about the same time, are today the main material for the study of the prehistory of the mosque. The problem is infinitely complicated by the circumstance that already the church did not belong to any normal type but was entirely exceptional, just as were the main sanctuaries of the other great Syrian towns, Ḥimṣ, Ḥamā, Aleppo, all antique temples, first converted into churches, then into mosques.

Madrasā Muršidīyyā: Plan

The plan is irregular because it lies on the hooked street. Beside the entrance, a prayer hall and a tomb chamber remain, with a square minaret raised on a block of masonry between these two adjacent rooms. The door from the entrance to the prayer hall has an unusual bracket (illustration), and both miḥrābs preserve remains of their original plaster decoration.

١. الدليل الزمني للنقوش الكتابيّة العربيّة Répertoire chronologique d'épigraphie arabe أو باختصار .R.C.E.A.

Specialists identify the following three stages in the evolution of Palmyrene sculpture:

The first stage spans approximately from 100 BC to AD 150. During this period, Palmyrene sculptors depicted the pupil and iris as two concentric circles, without marking the eyebrows. They focused on conveying the figures' virility and giving the hairstyles of both men and women a symmetrical appearance.

The second stage extends roughly from AD 150 to 200 and is illustrated in the attached photo. At this time, the pupil and iris were represented as a circle with a central dot, and the eyebrows were indicated. The style became realistic.

The third stage spans approximately from AD 200 to 270. Artists sought to convey wealth and luxury by depicting figures in sumptuous attire and sculpting women adorned with numerous necklaces, earrings, brooches, bracelets, and other ornaments.
