Tombstone of a Youth

 


A rectangular slab featuring a frontal view of the bust of a beardless youth. The eyes are almond-shaped and only the upper eyelids are indicated. The eyebrows are marked by thin incisions. The mouth is small, and the oral commissures are pointed downwards, conveying a sad impression. Thick, stylized hair locks cover the upper third of the forehead. The frontally depicted right ear is rather large. 

The clothes consist of a thin V-neck shirt under a thick cloak with vertical folds. 

Provenance: Si'a. Acquired by the Museum on July 24, 1946. The lower part of the stele has been lost since. The nose is chipped off, and the visible lower end of the left upper extremity has suffered some damage. The piece is otherwise in excellent condition.  
Era:Late first or second century CE. 
Substance: basalte.  
Dimensions: H 38 cm, W 54 cm, D 30 cm.
