لا تكفي سطورٌ قليلة لسرد مآثر صلاح الدين قاهر الصليبييّن في حطّين، وموحّد سوريّا ومصر على أنقاض الخلافة الفاطميّة وورثة الأتابك نور الدين.
قصّة السجال بين الملك الناصر وملك انجلترا ريتشارد قلب الأسد معروفةٌ ويكفي القول أنّها انتهت بالتعادل السلبي، أي فشل صلاح الدين في طرد الصليبييّّن من الساحل السوري كما فشل هؤلاء في استعادة القدس. ما العمل؟
تفتّق ذهن قلب الأسد على حلّ لا يخلو من الطرافة ولا تذكره على علمي كتب التاريخ العربيّة: لم لا يحاول الحصول عن طريق خاتم زواج على ما عجز عن نيلِهِ في ساحات الوغى؟ عرض ريتشارد يدَ أختِهِ جوّانا على الملك العادل، أخي صلاح الدين، على أن يكون مهرُها مدينة القدس مفتوحةً للمسلمين والمسيحييّّن.
ليس من المؤكّد أنّ صلاح الدين حمل هذا العرض على محمل الجدّ بيد أنّ العقبة الكأداء تمثّلت في جوّانا التي غضبت غضبةً مضريّة وتشاجرت مع أخيها الذي تجرّأ أن يساوم على زواجها من "كافر"، أي مسلم، وهالها أن تؤول إلى "حريم" الملك العادل. حاول ريتشارد تجاوز هذه المشكلة عن طريق محاولة إقناع العادل باعتناق المسيحيّة؛ بالطبع كان مصير هذا المسعى الفشل الذريع كسابِقِهِ وعاد قلب الأسد إلى أوروپا خاوي الوفاض.

Saladin's exploits are too numerous to be listed in few sentences. The founder of the Ayyubid Dynasty is credited with the unification of Egypt and Syria after which he proceeded to defeat the Crusaders at Hattin to subsequently conquer Jerusalem.
ReplyDeleteEurope promptly reacted with what was called the Third Crusade led by the King of England Richard Coeur de Lion. What ensued was a duel that issued in a stalemate: neither Saladin could expel the Franks from the Syrian coast nor could Richard muster enough force to recover Jerusalem and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. What would the English monarch do? He came forward with a creative proposal: he offered the hand of his sister Joanna to Saladin's brother, al-Malik al-Adil. The proposed union would revive the Kingdom of Jerusalem under a couple of mixed faith who would allow Muslims as well as Christians open access to the city.
As it turned out, the would be bride was not at all amused at the prospect of wedding an infidel (that is a Muslim) prince therefore becoming just another addition to his Harem. She scolded King Richard who came-up with an equally bizarre compromise, namely entreating al-Adil to convert to Christianity. Needless to say, the proposal came to naught. It is not clear whow seriously did Saladin take the offer of his erstwhile opponent but there existed not the remotest possibility of al-Adil to renounce Islam and Coeur de Lion was to abandon his Jerusalem ambition and return to Europe to face closer challenges.
