Numerous were the disasters that befell the Omayyad Mosque over its long history spanning more than thirteen hundred years, sometimes leaving but a skeleton of the edifice therefore necessitating extensive and costly restorations.
For some reason or another, quite few rulers opted to cover the mosque's mosaics with stucco rather than restoring them therefore unintentionally preserving those marvels for future generations.
The last calamity to affect the edifice was the great 1893 fire that caused extensive damage. The mosaics of the shrine suffered the most, those of the courtyard were largely spared.
The French orientalist Monsieur Eustache de Lorey is credited with supervising the removal of the stucco and uncovering the mosaics in the late 1920's. What we thus obtain is a magnificent 34.5 meters x 7.25 meters panel located 5 meters above the ground level. Some think that the scene represents the heavenly Paradise, others have called the ensemble "the Barada Panel".

تفاصيل من فسيفساء الرواق الغربي لجامع بني أميّة الكبير
ReplyDeleteتعرّض الجامع لعديد من الكوارث خلال عمره الذي تجاوز ثلاثة عشر قرناً أتت على الكثير من زينته الفسيفسائيّة. عمد كثير من حكّام دمشق عبر العصور إلى تغطية هذه الفسيفساء بالجصّ عوضاً عن ترميمها وساعد هذا عن قصد أو غير قصد على الحفاظ على بقاياها حتّى اليوم. كان حريق ١٨٩٣ آخر ما ابتلي به الجامع وكان الضرر الذي أصاب فسيفساء الحرم أكبر بكثير من الضرر الذي لحق فسيفساء الصحن. قام العالم الفرنسي Eustache de Lorey بالإشراف على إزالة الجصّ عن فسيفساء الرواق الغربي وكشف بذلك لوحة رائعة بطول ٣٤ متراً ونصف وارتفاع سبعة أمتار وربع تعلو خمسة أمتار عن مستوى أرض الرواق ويعتقد البعض أنّ هذه اللوحة تمثّل الجنّة وأطلق عليها البعض الآخر إسم لوحة بردى.
