Gate of Safety: the most beautiful and best preserved of the eight fortified gates of Damascus.
Constructed in the middle of the thirteenth century by the lastʾ Ayyūbīd sultan, al- Malik aṣ-Ṣāliḥ ʾAyyūb (1), the gate still possesses its ramparts. It is located on the north side of the city's enclosure overlooking River Barada. Note the arch stones of alternating colors and the magnificently sculpted inscription (2) over the lintel.
1. Not so. The last ʾ Ayyūbīd sultan (in Egypt) was his son, al-Muʿaẓẓam Tūrān Šāh. The last ʾAyyūbīd ruler of Damascus was an-Nāṣir Yūsuf.
