A view of Damascus from the northwest, from the entrance of Sūq Sāruja

Seen to the left is the Mamlūk Mosque of the Roses (Jāmiʿ al-Ward); on the horizon, the dome and three minarets of the Great Mosque of the ʾUmayyāds dominating the domes of three funerary madrasas of the 13th century: al-ʿAzizīyya (mausoleum of Saladin), al-ʿĀdilīyya al-Kubra (mausoleum of al-ʿĀdil, Saladin's brother), and al-Ẓāhirīyya (mausoleum of Sultan Baybars). To the right, emerging above a group of trees, are the walls of the ʾAyyūbid Citadel (13th century).
